Hello Almal
Time again for a few updates on the Haarlem.
In my previous post I mentioned that the verschansing has to go in next. The following photographs show the sequence of events:
So the whole process was started. On the Kolderstok drawings these slats are supposed to be installed approximately 5mm apart, but I stretched the distance to 1 cm in case I decide to place the cannons here. 5mm would just have been too close for that. As it is the sides are VERY solid with the bracing in place.
The two top planks (4mm x 1mm) were added - one horizontal on top of the slats and one vertically mounted just below the top one. There are still more slats to go on top of the horizontal plank which are then topped off with another horizontal plank. However, for now, this is far as I wanted to go. Both sides have been completed.
This picture shows the start of construction of the halfdek schot with door sills in place. As the windows are open and one is able to see through them quite clearly, the area behind the schot had to be covered. Left as it is, it would give an unfinished look so I made the following plan:
A piece of bamboo sheeting was cut to size, folded and inserted into the area behind where the schot goes. This worked well and no more of the bare spanten or untrimmed planking is visible.
The finished halfdek schotl. I still have to mount handles (ringetjies) for the doors but am looking for the right sized rings. Everything I could find until now is simply too big.
The installed schot on the halfdek. Behind the halfdek, the planked stuurplecht dek is visible. I have also placed a pre-bent 6mm x 1.5mm notenhout plank that was treated with beits to finish off the halfdek.
Close-up of the planked stuurplecht dek.
Word vervolg.
