KOLDERSTOK BATAVIA / HAARLEM

@cees050 The Clou water beits is something that I am not familiar with but it is always good to know about that. There will also be no problem if I have to import it to China - unlike the turpentine-based beits which is obviously not allowed on planes.

@Jaques

Toch niet heel de nacht doorgewerkt hee......

Yup! :D And yesterday, I wasn't even tired or sleepy!

zo met die donkere roosters zie je het ook steeds minder “Batavia” worden en meer jou “Haarlem”, met een beetje van Kolderstok en steeds meer Heinrich.....

Koos, thank you so much for these words.

This is exactly what I am trying to do. Kolderstok made it possible for me to attempt this build - in fact I think it will be very difficult for me to work with another bouwdoos manufacturer. Seeing that the Batavia provides the perfect base for the Haarlem, I am not scared to change a few things according to what I know of the Haarlem. So your comment sums up this build perfectly!

Heinrich,
You are cranking this baby out. Every time I look at her you are way ahead. As some have already said, the color of the gratings look good. It is more realistic than when they are of a much lighter color wood like you see on so many finished models.

Hello Almal

Time again for a few updates on the Haarlem.

In my previous post I mentioned that the verschansing has to go in next. The following photographs show the sequence of events:

So the whole process was started. On the Kolderstok drawings these slats are supposed to be installed approximately 5mm apart, but I stretched the distance to 1 cm in case I decide to place the cannons here. 5mm would just have been too close for that. As it is the sides are VERY solid with the bracing in place.

Build 319.jpg

The two top planks (4mm x 1mm) were added - one horizontal on top of the slats and one vertically mounted just below the top one. There are still more slats to go on top of the horizontal plank which are then topped off with another horizontal plank. However, for now, this is far as I wanted to go. Both sides have been completed.

This picture shows the start of construction of the halfdek schot with door sills in place. As the windows are open and one is able to see through them quite clearly, the area behind the schot had to be covered. Left as it is, it would give an unfinished look so I made the following plan:

Build 323.jpg

A piece of bamboo sheeting was cut to size, folded and inserted into the area behind where the schot goes. This worked well and no more of the bare spanten or untrimmed planking is visible.

Build 322.jpg

The finished halfdek schotl. I still have to mount handles (ringetjies) for the doors but am looking for the right sized rings. Everything I could find until now is simply too big.

Build 324.jpg

The installed schot on the halfdek. Behind the halfdek, the planked stuurplecht dek is visible. I have also placed a pre-bent 6mm x 1.5mm notenhout plank that was treated with beits to finish off the halfdek.

Build 325.jpg

Close-up of the planked stuurplecht dek.

Word vervolg.

Next up was the stuurplecht schot.

Build 327.jpg

Planking completed - ready to be trimmed, sanded and painted.

Build 330.jpg

Stuurplecht schot also installed on the stuurplecht dek. Behind that, the planked kampagne dek is visible.

Build 331.jpg

And then planking on the bakdek started. Normally I only post pictures of a section once I am finished, but I wanted to show some work in progress ... Note the mildew that has formed on the MDF due to the extreme humidity during summer on the East Coast in China.

Build 333.jpg

Rooster installed on bakdek. Kolderstok's plans for the Batavia do not indicate a rooster here - just a closed luik. As I will already have two closed luiken on the verdek, I wanted something different for the bakdek. The rooster is the exact same size as the luik.

Build 334.jpg

Please note that ALL plank edges still need to be TRIMMED and finished off.

Just to make sure that everything is still straight and true ...

Thank you all for watching and for following. As always your comments and input are greatly appreciated.

Stay safe, keep healthy and take care.

Warm greetings - Heinrich
