My New Toy! / Quick of Japan EP-8

Hey Guys,

Thought some of you might be interested in seeing this. I completely recomend this machine. Its been a pure pleasure to build and fly this thing. The quality is incredible and it flies like a big machine. I love it! :)

Here are some pics:

quick....
Origineel is het van quick world wide.
Meuk is het naar mijn idee, slechte kwaliteit, niet kompleet in de meeste gevallen.

Actually its the Quick World Wide (HHI) helis which are said to have had poor quality. This is the original maker / designer of the EP-8 and i have no complaints about the quality at all. The metal parts are almost surgical quality and this is the best flying machine i own now (i also have a zoom 400, viper 70, and 3 trex's XL's). I really have nothing but good to say about this machine so far. It was a joy to build and so far a joy to fly. I can also run the same packs in it i use for my Trex but then 2 of them. 2 x Thunder Power 2100 3 cell wired in parallel for a 3S2P pack. I get about 12 minutes with this setup.

Hacker A30-10L motor with 20T pinion
Jazz 40 ESC
CSM 420 micro gyro
Volz Speedmax XP digital servo on tail
3 x HS-81 servos
400mm CF blades from QJ

Next i will be trying 6S1P with a 10T pinion but im already quite impressed with the power this machine has on only 3 cells. This new hacker motor seems to be a pretty nice item.

Now i just need someone to airbrush the canopy for me. Do any of you know someone who can do this? I am willing to either pay for it or give some free parts from my shop (mfis.nl) for a nice airbrush job on this canopy. Its fiberglass.

Cheers,
Josh

No it is not. I still have not tried my first auto on a real machine yet... Is it impossible with a non driven tail or just alot more difficult?

When the tail is driven you have much more authority when descending.

With a non driven tail it is a matter of timing, hoping and wishing
The tail will spin continuously during the descend.

Hi All,

Just a small update. Satoer painted my canopy and i cut up some raptor 50 landing gear and mounted them to this heli. Also am running on 6 cells now instead of 3 and wow! its a whole new machine. Anyway.... Thanks to Michel for the awesome paintjob and without furthur ado here are the pics....

This is before i made the landing gear smaller:

And this is after i cut them shorter so they fit the dimensions of the heli better:

Comments welcome...

Yeah i do have a real small one here:

http://www.mfis.net/microflight/shop/product_info.php/cPath/56/products_id/367

This is still on 3 cells so not enough power for 3D. Just a bit of flying around. Also i hadnt mounted the raptor landing gear and Satoer hadnt painted the canopy yet. Its a much more impressive machine now on 6 cells. I doubt with this weather i will get to really fly it at the field for awhile tho :( My Lipo's sure dont perform as well in this cold at all :(

Cheers,
JD

Nice. The blue really does something to it. Flying jewelry if you wish. :P

Tobad about the weather though, I know how it is when you get a new "toy" and you cant go play with it. It ll drive you nuts, but you must resist! Youll hate yourself for it when you DO go out for "just a quick spin", and end up with your heli being reborn as a kit. (Ive been there..)

Any of those ghost stories about the quick being of a lesser quality showed up yet?

The Quick kit that is supposedly of lesser quality is the one made by the american company HHI or otherwise known as Quick Worldwide. They used to be affiliated in some way but they no longer are. The stories i have heard is that the Quick Worldwide (the one i have is a quick japan) is made in china and the materials and workmanship are of lesser quality. However i have never seen an HHI / Quick WW kit myself so i cant comment on it. All i can say is that there is nothing low quality on this kit in my opinion and the parts are very precision and of very high quality. There is also an expert version coming very soon with many improvements. I have been talking to Quick Japan about this and i quote:

"And I am sorry but we have only silver version now for version 2.
Soon ( about 2-3 months later ), we will have expert version
with 8mm shaft and 2mm frame, 5mm tail shaft, and 1pc motor
mount , 2 bearings swash plate, 3 bearings main grip etc."

So apparently they have discontinued the version of the kit i have now and currently the Silver V2 with improvement over the kit i have now is what is being sold at the moment and in 2-3 months there will be again a blue Expert version which will be a bit tougher still.

Even saying that, This version i have is no joke. Its very high quality and if you dont beleive it is 3D ready, please have a look at this Video of the same kit i have only in silver. Its really worth a watch.

He is using a digital full size futaba 9254 on the tail with excellent results as you can see in the video. Other than that there is really nothing special that he has done. He is flying the stock machine with the stock CF blades it comes with and a mega 16/25/4 on either 6 cells or 8 cell lipo packs. Using a castle creations phoenix 35 amp ESC with it (although i used a kontroniks jazz 40). So it really isnt any more expensive to put together than a trex aside from the fact that you need twice the lipo for this heli than you need for the Trex. And this heli comes with full metal upgrades stock. You have to buy those for the trex extra. Also like i have done he cut up some raptor 50 landing gear (this is actually where i got the idea). I just think it looks better but thats just a matter of taste.

Im thinking about importing this heli. The price is very nice (around 270 euros per kit i think) and that comes with motor pinions and CF blades. Compare this to the TREX 450 SE kit which is more than 450 Euros for the full metal version. Of course they arent really the same size / class of heli but i think its a logical next step for someone wanting something a bit bigger than the TREX. And you can re-use the lipo packs you already have for your Trex in this heli. Either hook them up in parallel for a 3S2P pack (10-15 minutes flight time) or hook them in a series for 22.2 volts if you want lots of power (arounf 8-10 minutes flight time).

Motor Choices are:

hacker a30-10L for sport flying on 3-4 cells (about 80 euros) 18-20T pinion
Mega motors 16/25/4 on 6-8 cells for incredible 3D power (110 USD) 8-10T pinion

Anyway... Enough about that for now :)

[EDIT] I forgot to mention that i did put some Raptor 50 "greenies" 3D paddles on it to speed up cyclic response. I think they were 12 euros or something to buy them.

Cheers,
JD

Considering youre getting full blown aluminum gear, 270 euros for a barebone is perty ok. What would one cost, completly fitted out with proper electronics?

op het filmpje vliegt ie met 8 cellen , dan vind ik het vermogen nog magertjes, komt omdat de heli relatief zwaar is.
