KOLDERSTOK BATAVIA / HAARLEM

Dear Friends

Another week ... another update. Being back at work obviously means much less time on the Haarlem, but given the circumstances, I'm happy to be back at work and with what I achieved this week.

The week started nicely with a package from the Admiraal delivered to my door. As you will remember, I stupidly destroyed my keel and had to order a new one along with 6 x extra cannons.

Build 259.jpg

To my surprise, Hans did not just send me a new keel, but a new roer, galjoen, galjoen beak and a host of other parts as well! (I don't know if this is a serious lack of confidence in my ability, or if he was just very nice :D !) Let's go for the nice.

Build 260.jpg

The extra six cannons with rolpaarden, blokke and hake en messing represent one of the two main differences between the Haarlem and the Batavia.

Build 261.jpg

And then it was back to planking the hull section above the berghouten on the stuurboord side and taking both planking levels up to dekvlak. As you can see from the picture above, the replacement keel has been fitted.

Whilst waiting for the glue to dry inbetween planks, I started with the front schot.
Build 262.jpg

The door frames and kozijne glued and in place.

Build 263.jpg

Test-fitting the doors.

Build 264.jpg

Starting the beplanking.

Build 265.jpg

Die schotelende plankies het nogal fijn werk gekos.

Build 266.jpg

The doors were sprayed with extremely thin layers of paint (3 in total) so as to maintain the laser-cut lines and grain of the wood.

Build 267.jpg

The wall was then sprayed black (in exactly the same way). Obviously, I still have to fit hinges and ring-handles to the doors and the whole assembly was put away for later fitment.

Kind regards - Heinrich

And so, it was back to the planking.
Build 268.jpg

Starboard side completed up to deck level. Absolutely no sanding has taken place yet.

Port side completed. Now that I look at the photograph, I can see that I still have to open the last geschutpoort fully.

Test-fitting the boegspriet to make sure that it still fits properly.

That is all for the week. Thank you so much for following and for reading - it is very much appreciated.

Dear All

Apologies for the double postings - my internet had a mind of its own tonight.

@amazon Dirk, jy moet nie eens van "val" praat nie!;)

@Jaques Baie dankie, Koos - ek probeer maar.

@Pingu57 Hi Peter. Baie dankie vir daardie mooi woorde. Dit is so n mooi bouwdoos dat ek my bes prober om alles reg te kry.

@Marcus Botanicus Thank you very much for the kind words, Marcus. I will be watching your planking of the Zeehaen very closely as that must be one of the most difficult shapes to plank. Hopefully I can learn from it.

Voor die schotten wel linden (4x1mm) gebruiken en niet noten (4x1,5mm).

Hello Leensen. You are absolutely right. At first I was actually not sure whether I was going to leave that schot unpainted (just the natural wood colour), but afterwards decided to paint it in any case.

For the rest, I will stick to the plan.:)
