SOLVED how to fix stutter or cogging brushless motor

My car stuttered everytime I tried to take off. After rolling a few feet, the cogging stopped. Cogging occurs when the ESC doesn't know the "position" of the brushless motor, sort of like when you switch gears on a 10 speed and for a second the chain is between gears.

You see three wires on a brushless motor. Note the position of the wires. Designated each wire as 1, 2, and 3. Now, the steps to fix the cogging.
wire 1, wire 2, wire 3

1. exchange wire 1 with wire 3.
2. then exchange wire 2 with the wire 3 (the wire that became 3).

If switching wires helped, it's likely that there was some bad connection somewhere, that was solved by swapping the wires. In theory swapping wires doesn't affect the way the motor operates, when it's sensorless. It should operate the same, no matter what combination the wires are connected, the only thing is when you swap just 2 wires, you reverse the motor rotation.
